Nexus 5X
Genre: Simulation, Strategy, RPG, 4X
Platforms: PC Steam
Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Roles: Game Design

After joining Whatboy Games in march of 2023, I helped to develop Nexus' onboarding process, specifically the design and implementation of the tutorial. I then started developing the Story Missions for the game, coordinating neccessary features with the game director and the rest of the development team.
Once I complete the mechanical prototype using mostly blueprint alongside an initial narrative overview I will then closely work with our writer to fully flesh out story dialgoue.
The design of missions is an iterative process and I regularly take in both studio and QA playtest feedback to finalize and polish the mission, I am also responsible for any bug fixing related to code or visuals I have provided for the mission.
I also developed any UI in UMG that was specifically neccesary for the tutorial/story mode.

Adam Doherty - Game Director at Whatboy Games
Sam worked as a Game Designer on our released title, Nexus 5X. During this time, Sam demonstrated a strong passion for video game design as well
as excellent technical design skills.

Sam was solely responsible for the designing and implementing the single player campaign missions for the title in Unreal Engine 4 and 5. Sam implemented the entire scripting and story flow for all our story and tutorial missions. Most of Sam’s work was done in Unreal Blueprint, but since we were a very small team, he was also keen and very able to help in other areas including C++ code and Audio Design. Sam has great technical and design knowledge and was able to create game and UI features from scratch using his knowledge of the Unreal Engine.
Sam is also a great team player. He worked closely with me on the game design, but also with coders and artists on features such as UI and AI integration. He was a lively contributor to all of our team meetings and weekly playtests. Sam was a key part of developing the friendly, but dedicated atmosphere of Whatboy Games even in a remote
working environment.
Sam is a very talented and dedicated designer who would be a great asset to any team. His creativity and ability to design and implement elegant solutions to complex problems make him an ideal candidate for any game design role, and I am confident that Sam will continue to excel in his chosen field!
